Helicodictyon L.A.Whitford & G.J.Schumacher, 1996: 274
Holotype species: Helicodictyon planctonicum (Whitford) L.A.Whitford & G.J.Schumacher
Original publication and holotype designation:Whitford, L.A. & Schumacher, G.J. (1966). Helicodictyon nom. nov. pro Heterodictyon and Helicodictyaceae fam. nov. (Ulotrichales). Phycologia 5: 274-276.
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Description: Plants consisting of wide, globose or irregularly shaped, mucilaginous matrix with embedded cells. Cells short, curved or irregularly lobed, often forming twisted and rather indistinct branched filaments. Cells uninucleate, each with parietal chloroplast and pyrenoid. Reproduction by vegetative cells that develop flagella. Reproductive cells spherical, ellipsoidal or ovoid and function as either zoospores or gametes. Helicodictyon mostly planktonic in ponds and other standing bodies of freshwater in the USA. Ultrastructure studies showed pyrenoids traversed by membranes and no evidence of phycoplast. Further investigations required before affinities can be ascertained. Helicodictyon may be more closely allied to Chlorococcales than Chaetophorales.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
