Description: Cells globular or ellipsoid, united in small colonies surrounded by mucilage. One chloroplast, with stigma. Reproduction by vegetative division, and by dorsiventral zoospores with one visible flagellum. When growth decreases, cells are transformed into neustonic pseudocysts surrounded by bivalved thick iron-encrusted walls. On germination tetrads and colonies are formed still surrounded by the persisting brown walls. Stomatocyst smooth, with a large porus. Sexual reproduction not observed. In freshwater, floating in small colonies, or neustonic. Found in a few places in Central Europe.
