Ochrostylon Pascher, 1942

Holotype species: Ochrostylon epiplankton Pascher

Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. (1942). Zur Klärung einiger gerfärbter und farbloser Flagellaten und ihrer Einrichtung zur Aufnahahme animalischer Nahrung. Archiv für Protistenkunde 96: 75-108.

Description: Cells solitary, seated singly at the end of an elongate, elastic stalk. The cells readily become detached from the stalk and can swarm away. Free-swimming stages indistinguishable from Ochromonas. Cells with 2 unequal flagella, one chloroplast, one small stigma and 2 contractile vacuoles; sessile cells sometimes without flagella. Protoplast may produce a large pseudopodium at the anterior end through which solid particles can be ingested. Smaller pseudopodia may also be produced from other parts of the protoplast. During reproduction by longitudinal division the cells escape from the stalk of the mother-cell and each daughter-cell secretes a separate stalk. Stomatocysts have been observed. Rarely observed epiphytic forms on freshwater planktonic diatoms.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
