Palatinella Lauterborn, 1906

Holotype species: Palatinella cyrtophora Lauterborn

Original publication and holotype designation: Lauterborn, R. (1906). Eine neue Chrysomonadinen-Gattung (Palatinella cyrtophora nov. gen. nov. spec.). Zoologischer Anzeiger 30: 423-428.

Description: Cell is half spherical to prismatic in shape, somewhat metabolic. Anterior part flattened with a short central flagellum surrounded by a collar of 16-20 slender pseudopodia. Chloroplast single bell-shaped golden brown. Cell enveloped in a conical gelatinous hyaline lorica, with an opening in the wide end through which the pseudopodial collar of the cell protrudes. Lorica is long (80-150 &m in the type species), attached by its pointed end to the substrate. In addition to the characteristic shape of the cell envelope, the known species are fairly large (cell length 12-25 &m, lorica length 90-150 &m). Nutrition apparently mixotrophic, food particles being engulfed at the pseudopodial bases. Reproduction is described to be by budding. The type species is to be found epiphytically in cold calcium deficient lakes, rare; Europe.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
