Peltomonas Vlk, 1941

Holotype species: Peltomonas volitans Vlk

Original publication and holotype designation: Vlk, W. (1941). Über eine neue farblose Monade Peltomonas volitans nov. gen. nov. sp.. Archiv für Protistenkunde 95: 315-318.

Description: Cells colorless, free-swimming, markedly flattened when seen from the side and hexagonal, pentagonal or irregularly rounded in face view. Single emergent flagellum inserted approximately in the middle of the cell in a trough of the ventral face. Protoplast contains 2 contractile vacuoles, a stigma (in one species) and a number of ejectable trichocysts. Reproduction not observed. Pre-division stages with 2 flagella and 2 stigmata. Stomatocysts unknown. This poorly known genus appears to be the colorless counterpart of Monochrysis. Ekelund and Patterson (1997) regard Peltomonas to be a "protist incertae sedis", possibly not related to the Chrysophyceae. Originally found in water samples from a bog spring in Czechia. Other species also found on soil in Australia and in plankton of sewage ponds in Germany.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
