Holotype species: Phaeogloea mucosa Chodat

Original publication and holotype designation: Chodat, R. (1922). Matériaux pour l'histoire des algues de la Suisse. Bulletin de la Société Botanique de Geneve, série 2 13: 66-114.

Description: Cells arranged in spherical colonies joined by mucilage. Each cell spherical, with a distinct wall. There is one parietal bilobed chloroplast. Reproduction mainly by autospores, 2-4 formed per cell. Empty mother cell wall remains in the mucilage. Also, swarmers have been observed, with two unequal flagella but no stigma. Stomatocysts have not been observed. Found in freshwaters of Europe (Switzerland, Denmark).
