Description: Cells colorless, more or less spherical, naked, 2 unequal flagella. Long hairy flagellum, in length 2-4 times the cell diam., points forward being slightly curved when the cell is sessile, but almost straight in free-swimming cells. The shorter smooth flagellum is directed posteriorly and follows a shallow furrow on the ventral cell surface, in swimming cells it trails. Cell attaches to the substrate by the tip of this smooth flagellum, which may be extended by a long mucus thread. The length of this holdfast may exceed the length of the long flagellum. The flagellum used for attachment may contract, when the cell is disturbed. The cytostomal area is situated next to the flagella and is surrounded by a large peristomal structure resembling a protruding lip. During division, the cell is non-motile. Apparently widespread in tropical marine and brackish waters of Australia, Hawaii and Brazil.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
