Siderodendron E.G.Pringsheim, 1946

Holotype species: Siderodendron manganiferum E.G.Pringsheim

Original publication and holotype designation: Pringsheim, E.G. (1946). On iron flagellates. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London B Biological Sciences 232: 311-342, pls 8, 9.

Description: Cells colorless, seated singly or in clusters of up to 8 cells at the ends of an irregularly branched system of rigid stalks. Each cell excretes its own cylindrical or somewhat tubular stalk, those formed by clusters of cells are irregularly rope-like in stucture. Stalks initially almost colorless, later usually becoming heavily mineralized by compounds of manganese and iron, becoming brown except near the cells. Clusters of cells are readily dislodged and do not form regular colonies. Individual cells cannot be distinguished from Spumella (Monas). They are naked, somewhat metabolic, usually pyriform or ovoid, the front end unequally protruded and bearing 2 flagella of unequal length. Protoplast with a single contractile vacuole near the center and several food vacuoles. Reproduction and stomatocysts unknown. According to Bourrelly this little known genus seems to be closely related to Anthophysa, but there is also some resemblance with Cephalothamnium, which was shown to have many features in common with members of the Bodonidae. Found attached to surfaces or floating in slightly polluted freshwater. Only known from the original description from England.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
