Holotype species: Siluania monomastiga Karpov

Original publication: Karpov, S.A., Kersanach, R. & Williams, D.M. (1998). Ultrastructure and 18S rRNA gene sequence of a small heterotrophic flagellate Siluania monomastiga gen. et sp. nov. (Bicosoecida). European Journal of Protistology 34: 415-425.

Description: Cells colorless, naked, uniflagellate, usually living planktonic and not gliding on surfaces. Cell shape ovoid to pear-like, with a rounded posterior end. Apically with a permanent cytostome that leads into a tube (cytopharynx), and a food vacuole located at the distal end of the tube. Flagellum inserted subapically, emerging from a pit or small flagellar pocket, with a unilateral array of tripartite tubular flagellar hairs; flagellar end blunt. One or two additional very short basal bodies may occur. Near flagellar pocket vesicles which may be part of the contractile vacuole system. Cells may lose flagellum and may form propagules (resting stages) that lack cell walls. Found in cold fresh waters i Russia. For classification of Siluania and other bicosoecid flagellates see Bicosoeca.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
