Stipitochrysis Korshikov, 1941

Holotype species: Stipitochrysis monorhiza Korshikov

Original publication and holotype designation: Korshikov, A.A. (1941). On some new or little known flagellates. Archiv für Protistenkunde 95: 22-44.

Description: Cells naked, elongate obovoid to subspherical, at the narrowed posterior end with a contractile rhizopodial stalk, by which the cell is attached to surfaces. Stalk usually single, up to several times as long as the cell, sometimes ramified or two stalks per cell. Anterior end of the cell obtusely rounded, sometimes with a single short flagellum or two unequal flagella. Instead of flagella there is often a single thread-like rhizopodium which may be branched, or sometimes with 2 or 3 separate rhizopodia at the anterior end or laterally on the cell. In cells living in the mucilage of other algae the flagella and rhizopodia are usually protruding from the mucilage of the host. Protoplast with one or two parietal chloroplasts, stigma and pyrenoid present or lacking, and twocontractile vacuoles which are variably positioned in the cell. Reproduction not observed. Stomatocysts known for one species. Occasionally reported from freshwater, mainly from acid streams and moorland ditches. Epilithic or epiphytic in the mucilage of other algae (e.g. Chaetophora, Mougeotia, Staurastrum).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
