Hormothece C.-C.Jao, 1944

Holotype species: Hormothece rupestris C.-C.Jao

Original publication and holotype designation: Jao, C.-C. (1944). Studies on the fresh-water algae of China. XIII. New Myxophyceae from Kwangsi. Sinensia 15: 75-90, pls 1, 2.

Description: Unicellular - colonial; colonies microscopic, composed of thick mucilaginous, colorless, usually more or less crosswise lamellated (additional growth zones) stalks, at the bases confluent and sometimes pseudodichotomously branched, usually joined to the substrate, at the upper end or in apical parts with freely disposed cells. Cells solitary, in groups or loosely arranged in short rows, widely oval, oval or cylindrical with rounded ends, blue-green, with homogeneous or slightly granular content. Cell division (binary fission) crosswise, perpendicular to the long axis of cells, in one and the same plane in successive cell cycles. Daughter cells soon separate from one another and form their own gelatinous envelopes, widened to the basis of a stalk. Reproduction by the dissociation of colonies and liberation of solitary cells. A little known genus containing periphytic species growing subaerophytically or in clear, freshwater submersed biotopes. Two species are known from China, one each from Indonesia and Spain.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
