Siphonosphaera Hindák, 1988

Holotype species: Siphonosphaera pannonica Hindák

Original publication and holotype designation: Hindák, F. (1988). Taxonomic position of two cyanophyte genera, Cyanostylon Geitler and Siphonosphaera gen. nov. Algological Studies 49: 411-423.

Description: Unicellular-colonial; colonies microscopic, Å spherical, subspherical to irregularly oval, mucilaginous, multicelled, free living (planktonic), enveloped by fine, unstructured, colorless, indistinct, gelatinous envelopes; cells situated solitary or in twos (after division) within the end parts of fine, mucilaginous, colorless, tube-like sheaths opened at the ends, radially oriented and pseudodichotomously branched, originating from the center of a colony; between single tube-like sheaths are spaces. Cells spherical, after division hemispherical, pale yellowish, blue-green, without aerotopes, in the colony placed Å peripherally. Cell division into two equal parts by binary fission, in two planes in successive generations, perpendicular to each other and to the surface of the colony; cells grow into the original size and shape before the next division. Multiplication of colonies by their dissociation in two or more parts. The type species was described from the plankton of the Lake Balaton (Hungary, SE Europe), and not confirmed yet from other localities.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
