Cyanodermatium Geitler, 1933

Holotype species: Cyanodermatium gelatinosum Geitler

Original publication and holotype designation: Geitler, L. (1933). Diagnosen neuer Blaualgen von den Sunda-Inseln. Arch. Hydrobiol. Suppl. 12: 622-634.

Description: Unicellular - colonial; mats on substrate, wide, thin, crustose, microscopic or macroscopic, composed of erect, parallel, pseudodichotomously or pseudotetrachotomously divaricated, short pseudofilaments, which are oriented more or less perpendicularly to the substrate; pseudofilaments enveloped by firm sheaths and joined tightly together or confluent by their sides; from above, they look pseudoparenchymatous. Cells irregular, sometimes slightly elongated in the direction of pseudofilaments. Cell division (binary fission) irregular, in more planes in successive generations, but in pseudofilaments, divisions crosswise to the pseudofilaments prevail. Nanocytes not observed. Reproduction probably by the clusters of several cells. Both species epilithic, described from stones in the littoral zone of lakes in Sumatra (Indonesia).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
