Solenodinium (Chatton) Chatton, 1952

Holotype species: Solenodinium fallax Chatton

Description: Plasmodial intra- and extranuclear parasites of Radiolaria. Young stages form a hyaline globular cytoplasm with a dinokaryon. During growth, the cytoplasm protrudes finger-like ramifying cytoplasmic projections into the host. During this process, the nucleus divides repeatedly without cytoplasmic division. The parasite perforates the nuclear envelope of the host and grows into the endoplasm of the host. Finally, the cytoplasm fragments into mononucleated parts forming spores, generally macro- and microspores, either Gymnodinium- or Gyrodinium-like. Fate of the spores unknown. The nucleus is like that of Syndinium Chatton as is also the life cycle; therefore, some authors regard this taxon only as a subgenus of Syndinium. Parasites of marine Collodaria and Sphaerellaria (Radiolaria).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
