Podocapsa Ercegovic, 1931, nom. illeg.

Holotype species: Podocapsa pedicellata Ercegović

Currently accepted name for the type species: Hydropodocapsa pedicellata (Ercegović) Molinari & Guiry

Original publication and holotype designation: Ercegovic, A. (1931). Podocapsa et Brachynema, deux genres nouveaux Chamaesiphonales de la côte adriatique de Dalmatie. Acta botanica Instituti Botanici Universitatis Zagrebiensis 6: 33-37.

Description: Unicellular-colonial; thallus epilithic, granular, thin, irregularly covering the substrate, composed of more or less erect or agglomerated, more or less parallel rows of several separated cells (to 4-6), which are polarized, narrowed towards the "basal" end and more widened in the upper part, "terminal" cells sometimes irregular spherical, pear-shaped, drop-like or club-shaped; the short rows of cells sometimes pseudodichotomously or pseudotetrachotomously divaricated, enveloped by thick firm, layered sheaths. Cells pale blue-green, with more or less homogeneous content. Cells divide in more planes, but with prevailing cross division, perpendicular to the long axis of the row of cells (short pseudofilament); divarication of rows is initiated by the lengthwise cell division (in respect to the axis of the pseudofilament). The smaller or narrower "basal" cells divide sometimes in nanocytes. Reproduction by nanocytes and probably also by small groups of cells, enveloped by gelatinous envelopes. Both species described from the surf zone of the calcareous rocky littoral of Mediterranean coast in Dalmatia (Yugoslavia). Little known genus, which needs revision.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
