Pseudoactiniscus Bursa ex Carty, 2014

Holotype species: Pseudoactiniscus apentasterias Bursa ex Carty

Original publication and holotype designation: Carty, S. (2014). Freshwater dinoflagellates of North America. pp. [i]-viii, [2], [1]-260, 153 figs. Ithaca & London: Comstock Publishing Associates. A division of Cornell University Press.

Description: Small to medium-sized (26-53 µm) spherical-to-subspherical cells with median, circular girdle and a sulcus running from apex to antapex. Central nucleus within distinct nucleomembrane; no chloroplasts, nutrition holozoic, but some cells seem to contain chloroplasts. Has been related by its author to the marine genus Actiniscus Ehrenberg, which contains a silicious endoskeleton. As this is missing, the description easily fits Gymnodinium Stein. Sexual reproduction and cyst formation not known. Needs reinvestigation. Freshwater planktonic, in Canadian Arctic lakes.

Information kindly contributed by M. Elbrächter but may now be outdated.

Taxonomic status: The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Moestrup, Ø. & Calado, A.J. (2018). Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa. Dinophyceae. Vol. 6 pp. [i]-xii, [1]-560, 421 figures. Berlin: Springer Spektrum.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
