Cephalomonas Higinbotham, 1942: 667

Classification:
Empire Eukaryota
Kingdom Plantae
Phylum Chlorophyta
Class Chlorophyceae
Order Chlamydomonadales
Family Phacotaceae

Holotype species: Cephalomonas granulata Higinbotam

Original publication and holotype designation:Higinbotham, N. (1942). Cephalomonas, a new genus of the Volvocales. Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 69: 661-668.

Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Description: Unicellular, biflagellate and uninucleate alga with the protoplast almost completely fillinga colorless to yellowish, rather firm lorica, 6-12 um wide, 8-15 um long.Flagella anterior, in apical view diagonal to one another. In broad frontview, cells distinctly differentiated into anterior and posterior portions, thewidth of the former at least twice that of the latter. In side view, celldistinctly compressed with rounded base and with lateral margins symmetricallybroadened to the apex which is broadly rounded and much wider than posteriorend. Chloroplast parietal and cup-shaped with one submedian to basalpyrenoid and an anterior stigma. Two contractile vacuoles at base offlagella.Asexualreproduction by division into 2 or 4 ellipsoid daughter cells that areliberated by fragmentation of mother cell lorica. Sexual reproductionisogamous, the quadriflagellate planozygote retaining motility for an extendedperiod. Mature zygote globose with a granulate wall. Meiosisapparently zygotic.Unicellular, biflagellate and uninucleate alga with the protoplast almost completely fillinga colorless to yellowish, rather firm lorica, 6-12 um wide, 8-15 um long.Flagella anterior, in apical view diagonal to one another. Comments: Cephalomonas> is an infrequently encountered freshwater form apparently known only from the eastern United States and Czechoslovakia

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
