Description: Cells rarely solitary, usually in 2-4-celled (rarely as many as 8 or more) colonies, the cells retained within the persistent mother cell wall. cells of the more common 4-celled colonies lying in the same plane or tetrahedrally arranged. Cells oval to spherical, 5-30 µm in diameter, separated from one another by dark-colored mucilage. Additional dark-colored mucilage accretions may be present as an external cap on each cell. Chloroplast single, massive, with or without a pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores (?2-4-8) which are released from the parental colony but remain within the persistent mother cell wall for extended periods. On occasion, the mother cell wall may enclose more than one cell generation. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Gloeotaenium, littoral or tychoplanktonic, is of widespread occurrence though seldom found in abundance. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
