Danubia F.Hindák, 1977

Holotype species: Danubia ansa Hindák

Original publication and holotype designation: Hindák, F. (1977). Studies on the chlorococcal algae (Chlorophyceae). I. Biologicke Práce 23: 1-192.

Description: Thalli colonial to 100 µm, with 4-celled coenobia ca 10 µm diameter, often aggregated to form higher order colony with all cells embedded in common gelatinous envelope. Envelope structureless, visible only with counter staining. Cells in each coenobium and syncoenobium planar, attached by cell wall remnants. Cells 3-7 x 2.5-5 µm, oval, with smooth cell walls. Cell uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal; pyrenoid single. Asexual reproduction by coenobial formation, each cell forming a 4-celled colony which is released by transverse splitting of parental cell wall into two cell wall fragments, which remain distinct in colony for some time, and allow for attachment of coenobia within colony. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Danubia planktonic and sporadic in freshwater river; type species reported only from Slovakia, however, presence in River Danube suggests wider distribution in southeastern Europe. Second species, D. africana, known from Africa and Cuba. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
