Description: Solitary spherical cells to 9-12 &m diameter with 10-20 radiating, colorless spines 10-25 &m in length and 2.5-3 &m diameter at base. Spines usually radiating in all directions. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal with single pyrenoid. Reproduction unknown. Echinosphaerella planktonic; reported from Europe, North and South America. Echinosphaerella has not been cultured, and original reports are rare and poorly documented. Forms identical to E. limnetica were recently identified in studies of Treubaria from culture and nature, casting doubt on the distinctiveness of the genus (i.e. E. limnetica is proposed as Treubaria limnetica by Fott and Kovácik (1975) and as a synonym. of T. schmidlei by Reymond (1980, 1985).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
