Description: Thalli microscopic, 11-100 &m in diameter, with 4-8 to many cells embedded in structureless mucilage cells often in clusters of four or eight. Cells spherical, 1.5-10 &m in diameter, cell wall remnants not distinct. Cells uninucleate with single parietal chloroplast pyrenoids usually single per cell (2-4 in one species). Asexual reproduction by means of spherical to ovoid autospores, produced 4-8 (rarely 16) within each sporangium and released by gelatinization of sporangial wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Eutetramorus planktonic with different species in oligotrophic to eutrophic freshwaters reported from Europe, Greenland and North America. Eutetramorus also placed in Coelastraceae by some authors similar to Sphaerocystis and several species were referred to the latter genus. Coenococcus included as synonym of Eutetramorus by some authors (e.g. Komárek and Fott 1983), whereas Hindák (1988) retains the genus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
