Original publication and holotype designation: Navarro, J.N. (1982). A survey of the marine diatoms of Puerto Rico IV. Suborder Araphidineae: Families Diatomaceae and Protoraphidaceae. Botanica Marina 25: 247-263.

Description: Weakly siliceous frustules united in zig-zag chains. Frustules in girdle view rectangular with rounded corners and a deep pervalvar axis. Valves elliptical in valve outline. Punctate striae radiate in center of valve face becoming divergent near the apices. Striae continue in parallel rows on valve mantle. No processes (including rimoportulae) or pore fields of any kind. Cingulum consists of several open bands with ligulae and antiligulae opposite one another. Septa located on the internal advalvar edge of each band. Nucleus and chloroplasts lie in central position. Common in the neritic plankton from Cayo Enrique-Gata, Puerto Rico.
