Fogedia Witkowski, Lange-Bertalot, Metzeltin & Bafana, 1997

Holotype species: Fogedia giffeniana (Foged) Witkowski, Lange-Bertalot, Metzeltin & Bafana

Original publication and holotype designation: Witkowski, A., Metzeltin, D. Lange-Bertalot, H. & Bafana, G. (1997). Fogedia gen. nov. (Bacillariophyceae), a new naviculoid genus from the marine littoral. Nova Hedwigia 65: 79-98, 92 figs, 2 tables.

Description: Cells solitary, naviculoid in shape, with two girdleappressed plastids located along the valve margin (as typical in Navicula sensu stricto), and with two pyrenoids. Plates not smooth (as in typical Navicula sensu stricto) but somewhat thickened and undulated in the middle, often accompanied by four conspicuous storage granules near the isthma and plastid juncture. Valves broadly lanceolate with slightly protracted apices. Valve face flat, abruptly bending into a shallow mantle. Transapical striae uniseriate, composed of apically elongate, simple slit-like areolae occluded by hymenes (similar to Navicula sensu stricto). Areolae around the central area often differed from the others with altered shape and orientation. Striae in some species interrupted by hyaline lateral areas slightly depressed below the surface of the valve face. Raphe medial, straight, not internally on side of the raphe costa. External central raphe endings straight, externally rather expanded, internally simple. Apical raphe endings very short, turned towards the same side of the valve; however, may be rather prolonged but never strongly geniculate (as in Navicula sensu stricto). Girdle narrow, composed of two unperforated bands. Species found in marine, and rarely in brackish, water habitats. Members of the epipelon.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
