Description: Filaments relatively short, stiff and sometimes twisted, mainly uniseriate, infrequently biseriate. Cell wall thick, lamellated, ensheathed by mucilaginous envelope of varying thickness. Contiguous cells closely adhering, basically cylindrical, often slightly inflated. Chloroplast single and plate-like, extending around cell circumference, irregularly lobed and constricted at one side; pyrenoids and starch absent. Asexual reproduction by aplanospores, 1-8 per cell, discharged through rupture of parental cell wall. Vegetative multiplication by fragmentation of filaments. Simultaneous gelatinization of outer cell wall layer and extensive fragmentation often results in accumulation of irregularly distributed unicells embedded in common mucilaginous sheath. Method of sexual reproduction unknown. Hormidiopsis (sub)aerial, forming thin sheets on bark of trees and on needles of Abies alba. Reported occurrence from soil doubtful.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Burova, O.V., Tsarenko, P.M., Kovalenko, O.V., Mikhailyuk, T.I., Petlovany, O.A., Lilitska, G.G. & Bilous, O.P. (2011). Ulvophyceae. In: Algae of Ukraine: diversity, nomenclature, taxonomy, ecology and geography. Volume 3: Chlorophyta. (Tsarenko, P.M., Wasser, S.P. & Nevo, E. Eds), pp. 20-61. Ruggell: A.R.A. Gantner Verlag K.-G.

Comments: Taxonomic status of Hormidiopsis uncertain because of indefinite shape of chloroplast, infrequent biseriate arrangement of cells, and inability to produce starch. Because of resemblance to Prasiola assigning Hormidiopsis to Blastoporaceae (Prasiolaceae) suggested. Type specimen of Hormidium crenulatum Kützing incorrectly used for typifying Hormidiopsis crenulata, thus making Hormidiopsis crenulata (Kützing) Heering in Pascher illegitimate.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
