Korschpalmella Fott, 1974

Holotype species: Korschpalmella microscopica (Korshikov) Fott

Original publication and holotype designation: Fott, B. (1974). Taxonomie der palmelloiden Chlorococcales (Familie Palmogloeaceae). Preslia 46: 1-31.

Description: Thalli colonial, with few to many cells embedded in spherical to irregular, broad structureless mucilage. Cells spherical to oval, 1.5-10 &m diameter with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts single and parietal, cup-shaped; pyrenoids absent. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 2- 4 per sporangium; released by rupture or gelatinization of parental cell walls. Sexual reproduction by isogamy in type species; details unclear but isogametes biflagellate and fusiform, 9-11 x 4-5 &m with eyespots. Korschpalmella planktonic in lakes and rivers, including peat bogs; reported only from Europe but probably more widely distributed. Genus similar to Radiococcus but without pyrenoids. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
