Description: Thallose; thallus composed of free, separated, initially creeping filaments and later erect branches; filaments more or less densely parallel situated forming Symploca-like fascicles. Trichomes uniseriate, only rarely with cells dividing lengthwise and laterally branched (V- and T-type). Cells barrel-shaped (forming torulous trichomes) in old filaments with thickened, usually brownish sheaths, young trichomes and branches with cylindrical cells, with thin, colorless sheaths. Heterocytes intercalary, rarely lateral. Akinetes missing. Reproduction by 8-10-celled hormocysts, which separate at the ends of branches. Sheaths of hormocysts thick, usually brownish. Hormogonia not known. Aerophytic, known mainly from flower-pots in glasshouses.
