Holotype species: Marvania geminata Hindák

Original publication and holotype designation: Hindák, F. (1976). Marvania geminata gen. nov. et sp. nov., a new green alga. Arch. Hydrobiol. Suppl. 49: 261-270.

Description: Solitary or 4-8 cells arranged in weakly filamentous row embedded in thin mucilage layer. Cells basically spherical. Cell wall relatively thick and randomly impregnated with variously sized granules, seldom impregnated with granules of different size, seldom in 1-2 longitudinal ribs. Chloroplast single, lanceolate or discoid, without pyrenoids. Cell division involving budding-like mechanism, initiated by cell expansion effecting asymmetric breakage of parental cell wall, followed by bulging of parental chloroplast. Reproduction by walled aplanospores; method of sexual reproduction unknown.
