Precise date of publication: 28 August 1900 (see Woelkerling & Lamy 1998: 680 for details).

Description: No description is provided at this time as the genus is currently referred to synonymy.

Information kindly contributed by Wm. J. Woelkerling but may now be outdated.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lithophyllum.

Comments: Woelkerling (1991) concluded from a detailed study of the lectotype specimen (TRH A4-183; see Woelkerling et. al. 2005: 45-6) that Perispermon hermaphroditum, the type species of Perispermon, belongs to Lithophyllum (Family Corallinaceae). Consequently, Perispermon is treated as a heterotypic synonym of Lithophyllum. The status of L. hermaphroditum as a distinct species within Lithophyllum remains unresolved (Woelkerling 1991), but this does not alter the present status of the genus as a heterotypic synonym.

Nomenclatural note
The ICBN rules cited below are those adopted by the Seventeenth International Botanical Congress, Vienna, Austria, July 2005 (McNeill et al. 2006).

The generic name Perispermon (Heydrich 1900: 316) is accompanied by diagnosis (as part of a generic key) and thus is validly published (ICBN Art 41.2) even though the author did not describe any new species or effect any new species name combinations within the genus. Heydrich (1900: 316, footnote 7) included a single taxon described as Lithothamnion sp. 1 in an earlier paper (Heydrich 1897:7), also indicating that a manuscript on that taxon had been completed. The manuscript was published the following year (Heydrich 1901) and contains a detailed account of the single included species, P. hermaphroditum.

The generic name Perispermon is typified (ICBN Art. 10.1) by the type of P. hermaphroditum, the only species originally included in the genus.

In accordance with ICBN Art. 13.3, the name Perispermon is treated as pertaining to a non-fossil taxon because its type is based on a non-fossil specimen. No species based on fossil types have been assigned to the genus. - (20 July 2009) - M.D. Guiry

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
