Rhizolekane Pascher, 1932

Holotype species: Rhizolekane sessilis Pascher

Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. (1932). Über einige neue oder kritische Heterokonten. (Beiträge zur Kenntnis der einheimischen Algenflora. II.). Archiv für Protistenkunde 77: 305-359.

Description: Single celled amoeboid organisms in a cup-shaped lorica attached to the substratum by a large base, never forming an elongate peduncle. Lorica 1.5-2.5 times taller than wide, (10) 12-15 _m in length, usually delicate and colorless to yellowish from impregnation with iron and largely open at the apex. The translucent cell 7-8 _m long, only emerges slightly from the lorica opening. It forms toward the exterior large isolated pseudopodia, very mobile, as erect rhizopodia, largely divergent, often very long, simple or branched. Inside the rhizopodia captured bacteria may be present, and diverse algae may be present in the pseudopodia.. Chloroplast single and irregularly ribbon shaped, of varying width and often weakly lobed. Chloroplast very pale and not always completely parietal, generally found in the lower half of the protoplast. Cells without pyrenoids and stigmata. Storage products comprised of fat and oil bodies. Neither asexual reproduction nor stages of division observed. Rhizolekane from brackish water attached to Vaucheria; known only from Germany and Belgium. Species distinguished based on lorica morphology

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
