Description: Cells spherical or ovoid, embedded in multilayered wall and successively discarding old walls in one direction, thus becoming located at the end of a stalk of discarded walls. Cells often with red globules. Propagation by bipartition or by division into 4 cells. Zoospores have been described as gymnodinioid or hemidinioid. Insufficiently studied genus with a single species in fresh water and one in the sea.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Moestrup, Ø. & Calado, A.J. (2018). Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa. Dinophyceae. Vol. 6 pp. [i]-xii, [1]-560, 421 figures. Berlin: Springer Spektrum.

Comments: Non-motile dinophytes, forming large crusts together with other crust-forming algae embedded in thick layers of mucus. Cells spherical to ovoid, with dense cell contents so that the typical dinokaryotic nucleus can be seen only after staining. Chloroplasts of dark brown or red color. During growth, cells successively shed mucus walls several times so that each cell appears to be stalked. Cell division by binary fission thus producing "branched stalks". The genus needs reinvestigation and delimitation from Gloeodinium Klebs (1912). Benthic habitats of freshwater or marine coasts, not necessarily submerged.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
