Schizochytriodinium Elbrächter, 1988

Holotype species: Schizochytriodinium calani M.Elbrächter

Original publication and holotype designation: Elbrächter, M. (1988). Life cycle of Schizochytriodinium calani nov. gen. nov. spec., a dinoflagellate parasitizing copepod eggs. Helgoländer Meeresuntersuchungen 42: 593-599.

Description: Ectoparasitic dinophytes of crustacean eggs. A dinospore with transverse and longitudinal flagella and grooves infests a copepod egg, forming a feeding tube which penetrates the egg wall and starts to feed, apparently by extracellular digestion and subsequent resorption. During food uptake, it grows to a primary cyst enclosed in a cyst wall. This trophont produces subsequently 3-4 secondary cysts by plasma division. After liberation of each secondary cyst into the sea by rupture of the primary cyst wall, the trophont produces a new primary cyst wall. Secondary cysts form many dinospores by palintomy. Dinospores released from the secondary cyst can infect new copepod eggs after a time lag of about 2 days. Parasites of marine copepod eggs, known from the Greenland Sea.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
