Description: Microscopic coenobia 16-32 &m in diameter comprised of 4-8 tightly packed cells. Cells 6-10.5 &m diameter, more or less spherical with flattened sides where attached to other cellsOuter face of cell smooth or with slight point (S. kergeulense), or with one (S. rotundatum) or several (S. howardii, S. printzii) nipple-like projections. Cell walls mostly smooth, slightly punctate in S. keurgeuelense. Nuclei and chloroplasts not described. Flagellated stages and methods of reproduction unknown. Soropediastrum in freshwater reported only from Keguelen Islands, Switzerland and Alaska with species endemic to each area. It has been questioned if this genus is distinct from Coelastrum and several species recently transferred from that genus. Genus requires complete reinvestigation.
