Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rutilaria.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Witkowski, J., Sims, P.A. & Harwood, D. (2011). Rutilariaceae redefined: a review of fossil bipolar diatom genera with centrally positioned linking structures,with implications for the origin of pennate diatoms. European Journal of Phycology 46(4): 378-398.

Nomenclatural note
CAS: "The genus name was validly published in Greville 1866, p. 125 (ref. 000985), with a description, but no species were explicitly included; later a description and illustration of Syndetocystis grevilleanus is presented in Walker et Chase 1887 p. 6 and pl. IV, fig. 13 (ref. 002868) (introduced as Syndetocystis grevilleanus [Ralfs M.S.] Grev. in litt. 1864, and described as a new species). It is clear that S. grevilleanus is conspecific with the material associated with the genus protologue, and qualifies as the lectotype. Description and illustration also found in Van Heurck 1896, p. 432, fig. 155 (ref. 000897). Ross in Farr et al. (1979) incorrectly gives Syndetocystis barbadensis Walker et Chase 1887 as the type." - (20 October 2011) - M.D. Guiry
