Description: Unicellular-colonial; colonies small, microscopic, gelatinous, irregularly spherical or irregular, with randomly but even situated short, wreath-like groups (ring-like) of 2-4 cells, sometimes composed of daughter colonies. Colonies with cells arranged in more or less flat subcolonies (two species) were separated by Hindák (1988) in a special genus (Merismoarcus). Gelatinous enveloping mucilage colorless, not structured, more or less limited or diffluent. Cells cylindrical or ellipsoidal with rounded ends, always arcuated in ring-like short rows, with homogeneous content, sometimes slightly granular, usually pale or intense pinkish.Cell division crosswise, perpendicular to the longer cell axis; from this division process arise the characteristic wreath-like groups of cells. Reproduction by the dissociation of colonies or by solitary cells (?). The type species was described from wet mud in the littoral of lakes in Lettland; all species known from freshwater biotopes, moors, swampy pools and small reservoirs with plenty of aquatic plants in the temperate zone of the Europe and central America. Perhaps they are Rhodobacteria.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
