Description: Unicellular, biflagellate, uninucleate algae with protoplasts contained in a firm, slightlycompressed lorica. Lorica typically roughened by iron deposits impartinga dark brown to black color, in some cases obscuring the protoplast. Innarrow side view, lorica rather irregularly shaped; in broad front view, loricaellipsoid to globose or angular. Protoplast usually closely adpressed toinner surface of lorica. Flagella anterior, emerging from separateopenings of lorica. Chloroplast principally cup-shaped, with 1-severalpyrenoids and anterior stigma. Two contractile vacuolespresent at base of flagella.Asexualreproduction by division into 2-4(-8) daughter cells which are released byfragmentation of mother cell lorica. Sexual reproduction poorly known, occurring by fusion of isogametes.Unicellular, biflagellate, uninucleate algae with protoplasts contained in a firm, slightlycompressed lorica. Comments: Thorakomonas is an infrequently encountered freshwater genus; insome species, known only from type localities. Five species are welldescribed and reported only from Europe. They are distinguished based onnumber and position of pyrenoid(s), chloroplast morphology, cell shape andstigma size and shape. Six additional species were described, however, some of these have been excluded from Thorakomonas, whereas othersare so poorly described as to be of little taxonomic utility. Among theseare two speices, T. feldmannii Bourrelly and T. phacotoides G. M.Smith, which have been reported from the southeastern United States. Theformer has been transferred to Dysmorphococcus by Ettl (1983b); thelatter is considered by Ettl (1983a) to be assignable (subject to furtherstudy) to either Granulochloris or Coccomonas.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
