Lithodesmioides H.A.von Stosch, 1987

Holotype species: Lithodesmioides polymorpha Stosch

Original publication and holotype designation: Stosch, H.A. von (1987). Some marine diatoms from the Australian region, especially from Port Phillip Bay and tropical North-eastern Australia. II Survey of the genus Palmeria and of the family Lithodesmiaceae including the new genus Lithodesmioides. Brunonia 9(1): 29-87.

Description: Cells solitary, rectangular, square or rarely trapeziform in girdle view. Plastids round and numerous. Valves regularly quadrangular or irregularly triangular, quadrangular or quinquangular, with well-defined elevations at the corners, a circular depression in the middle of the valve and slightly concave mantle; the transition between the valve face and the steep, deep mantle is abrupt. A subcircular hyaline area strewn with spinules surrounds a central bilabiate process on the valve face. Low, narrow and bifurcating costae radiate from the central area and extend over the mantle; a single row of circular, unobstructed poroids lie between each pair of costae. Elevations well-developed, covered by larger pores. Submicroscopical semiglobular granules dispersed over the valve face and mantle. Cingulum composed of ca. 10 irregular bands of greater irregularity and complexity than those found in the genera Lithodesmium and Ditylum. Lithodesmiodes is similar to Lithodesmium but lacks moats between the corners and central area found in the latter genus. Found in planktonic assemblages from neritic and estuarine waters in tropical, northeastern Australia.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
