Original publication and holotype designation: Stosch, H.A. von (1977). Observations on Bellerochea and Streptotheca, including descriptions of three new planktonic diatom species. Beihefte zur Nova Hedwigia 54: 113-166.

Description: Flat, rarely twisted or spiralled, band-like colonies without intercellular spaces; plastids numerous, rounded. Cells biangular or triangular, thin and broad; shaped like a parallelogram with acute angle of 65-80% or rarely rectangular or triangular in broad girdle view. Apart from a central and marginal costate depression (the "basket") in which a rimoportula is located, valves nearly straight. Girdle composed of numerous narrow and open bands; one row of pores at advalvar margin of bands and scattered pores elsewhere. Differs from Streptotheca which is more heavily silicifies and lacks a marginal "basket". Planktonic, recorded from the marine tropical waters of Africa and Australia.
