Holotype species: Pachyneis gerlachii Simonsen

Description: Frustules in girdle view almost elliptical due to high curvature of valve plane. Valves fusiform with subacute apices, highly vaulted. Raphe straight, except near central nodule where both slits arch sidewise towards same side of valve; central pores very close to one another. Keel absent. Valve membrane very delicate, with 2-4 longitudinal folds on either side of raphe, crossed by straight apical and transapical costae. Striae very delicate, arranged in apical and transapical lines. Girdle bands absent. Similar to Haslea in the valvar outline and perpendicular striation, and Plagiotropis (Tropidoneis) in the highly vaulted valves and longitudinal folds. Rarely found in the tropical and subtropical plankton from the Indian and Pacific Oceans
