Description: Unicellular solitary cells less than 10 _m long without a true cell wall and with metaboly. Cells with irregular elliptical outline and mamillate with an apical depression. Cell biflagellate with one very short flagellum. Chloroplast single, forming a small, more or less twisted, axial band. One or two large contractile vacuoles present at base of flagella. Stigmata and pyrenoids absent. Asexual reproduction by longitudinal division of motile stages and palmelloid phase. Globular cysts observed with cap-like operculum slightly smaller than cyst diameter. Polykyrtos free-swimming and reported once from among Elodea Michx.; reported only from Europe.
