Description: Colonial organisms with colonies in a single plane or tetrahedral, generally comprised of four, rarely two cells. Colonies solitary or sometimes united in small groups. General mucilage absent. Cells 3-11 _m diameter, spherical, rarely ovoid, sometimes slightly flattened in zone of contact. Cell dimensions can vary even in the same colony. Cell wall either thin or thick and often red colored. Chloroplast single or 4-12, with variable dimensions, cup shaped, lobed or discoid and parietal, sometimes very pale. Pyrenoids absent. Storage products consist of red, globular oil bodies and protein crystals. Asexual reproduction by the formation of new colonies inside each cell with 4 (more rarely 2) cells by means of autospores arranged in the manner of the species. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
