Chlorokoryne Pascher, 1938

Holotype species: Chlorokoryne petrovae Pascher

Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. (1938). Heterokonten. In: Kryptogamen-Flora von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. (Rabenhorst, L. Eds) Vol. 11, Teil 3, pp. 321-480. Leipzig: Akademische Verlagsgesellschaft.

Description: Unicellular organisms 10 _m long and 8 _m wide, either solitary or in aggregations, attached to substratum by basal portion. Cell shape very variable, ellipsoidal, ovoid, pyriform, irregularly cylindrical or often curves or irregularly bending, sometimes polyhedral when gregarious. The basal portion is often enlarged and flattened or sometimes terminated with a conical thickening. The free apex is always very thick, elongated rounded or horn-like and often stratified. The cell wall is mostly thick, especially at the apex, sometimes split, often ornamented in particular ways and sometimes red colored. Chloroplasts few or abundant, parietal, discoid to ribbon shaped or even polygonal, without pyrenoids. Cytoplasm with red oil granules and refringent protein crystals. Method of asexual reproduction unknown. Chlorokoryne attaches to aquatic plants on banks of ponds; known only from central Europe. Species distinguished based on the form and importance of the parietal thickenings, on the morphology of the basal part of the cell and on the number of chloroplasts and their morphology. Revision of this rare genus will be required.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
