Description: Minute, free-swimming, biflagellate monads; furrow-gullet system poorly developed, with a longitudinal furrow apparently lacking associated ejectisomes; with one or two chloroplasts that may be a red-brown or blue-green color; pyrenoid and eyespot may or may not be present. An artificial and poorly known assemblage of cryptomonads. Butcher (1967) emended Schiller's protologue to include all "Cryptomonas-like organisms in which there is a vertical depression or furrow without [ejectisomes]". Thus relegating the genus to waste-bucket status, Butcher included all the incompletely described species in which ejectisomes had neither been figured nor mentioned. The present definition encompasses marine and freshwater forms described in the main from European localities. There is no detailed study of any species of Hillea.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
