Gephyria Arnott, 1858

Holotype species: Gephyria telfairiae Walker-Arnott

Original publication and holotype designation: Walker-Arnott, G.A. [Arnott, G.A.W.] (1858). On Arachnoidiscus. Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science 6: 159-165.

Description: Valves elongate linear, apices rounded, with a fine sternum from which transverse striae run without a break across the valve face and down the curved mantle. Valves chambered. Externally there are biseriate striae of small round pores; towards the valve margin the striae become triseriate/ These pores open internally into chambers separated by thick walls? The chambers themselves open internally by large, somewhat irregularly-shaped apertures which form a more-or-less zig-zag row along each side of the valve. Extensive apical pore fields occur at each end of the concave valve but not the convex. The line of the sternum continues through two-thirds of the apical pore plate. One rimoportula is present on the edge of the pore field at each end of the concave valve, both lying on the same side of the axial area. Rimoportulae also occur on the convex valve in similar positions. Internally, each rimoportula is a large spade-shaped structure. The copulae are split rings, chambered like the valves, with a single row of chamber apertures on both external and internal surfaces: the internal apertures are very much smaller than those of the valve chambers. Cingulum composed of at least 2 copulae.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
