Description: Cells solitary, cuneate in girdle view, attached by a single mucilaginous stalk. Valves linear, slightly heteropolar, with rounded apices. Valve face flat. Well developed pseudoseptum at the foot pole. Striae uniseriate, broken by a rim of silica running around the circumference of the valve. Each half of the stria subdivided into pores; towards the foot pole the mantle striae are reduced to single round pores. Foot pole with a cluster of densely packed round pores, similar to those on the valve, through which the stalk is secreted. Raphe central, straight; primary side of raphe-sternum (i.e. that side of the raphe system that is laid down first, Mann 1984a) thickened internally, so that the raphe opens laterally. Raphe system associated with the head pole shorter than that associated with the foot pole. External central raphe endings expanded, pore-like; internal endings straight. Terminal fissures present, curved to one side; the valve heavily silicified beside the terminal fissure on the primary side at the foot pole. Cingulum composed of several open, perforated bands. Valvocopula septate at the head pole.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
