Type designated in: Grunow, A. (1880). On some new species of Nitzschia. Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society, ser. 3 3: 394-397, pls 12, 13.

Description: Cells weakly cuneate in girdle view with truncate ends. Valves clavate with straight or nearly straight margins. Striae finely punctate. Raphe marginal, fibulae irregular in shape and spacing. Gomphonitzschia, primarily a tropical-subtropical genus, has been recorded in fresh waters from Africa, India and North America. The absence of costae in Gomphonitzschia is used to separate this genus from costate Gomphotheca species.
