Index Nominum Genericorum: Polymyxus L.W. Bailey 1862: 341 (Bacillariophyta); type: P. coronalis L.W. Bailey. Index Nominum Algarum: Polymyxus (Diatomaceae); P. coronalis L.W. Bailey 1861: 165; 1862: 341, figs 55-59. According to Nelson & De Peribonio (1993: 167), the centric diatom genus Polymyxus (Bacillariophyta) was originally described in 1862 by Loring W.
