Description: Solitary or forming irregular clumps of cells attached to substratum and not embedded in mucilaginous matrix. Cells asymetrical and often slightly irregular, pyriform to ovoid or slightly elongate, often with narrower basal end, 3.5-20 x 2.5-13 µm. Cell walls smooth and colorless, sometimes slightly thicker at poles. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast parietal and band shaped with single pyrenoid. Asexual repoduction by autospores and fragmentation of cell masses; (2-) 4-8-16 spores per sporangium, released by rupture of sporangial wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Apodococcus from a variety of freshwater and soil habitats, the type species from a peat bog lake; reported from Europe and North America in temperate to subtropical (Cuba) climates. Apodococcus considered very similar to Apodochloris from which it differed based on the absence of zoospores. Marvan and others (1984) reject Apodococcus as an inappropriate segregate from Chlorolobion. Species of Apodococcus previously assigned to Characium and Chlorolobion. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
