Original publication and holotype designation: Vischer, W. (1960). Reproduktion und systematische Stellung einiger Rinden- und Bodenalgen. Schweiz. Z. Hydrol. 22: 330-349.

Description: Plants formed of multiseriate filaments, giving rise to globular masses of cells from which grow out branches of sarcinoid packets of cells at base. Branches decrease in width towards summit where uniseriate. Cells uninucleate with parietal chloroplasts, without pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction in culture by means of branches on agar which consist of rounded, thick-walled cells which function as akinetes. Some surface cells globular, producing 2 to 4 aplanospores. Zoospores biflagellate. Sexual reproduction unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Comments: Jaagiella obtained from soil in Europe and description based on plants grown in culture. The poorly known and incompletely described genus Filoprotococcus is undoubtedly synonymous with Jaagiella and its name should have priority.
