Description: Plants heterotrichous, consisting of a crust formed of densely packed, uniseriate and laterally branched filaments. Cells of prostrate filaments globose and of erect system cylindrical. Cells uninucleate, each with parietal chloroplast without pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate zoospores, 1-4 produced per cell, dehiscing through lateral aperture. Sexual reproduction unknown. Zoddaea only known from humid volcanic rocks on island of Limosa in Italy. Considered to closely resemble Leptosira.
