Protoodinium Hovasse, 1935

Holotype species: Protoodinium chattonii Hovasse

Original publication and holotype designation: Hovasse R. (1935). Deux péridiniens parasites convergents: Oodinium poucheti (Lemm.), Protoodinium chattoni gen. nov. sp. nov. Bulletin biologique de la France et de la Belgique 69: 59-86.

Description: Thecate dinoflagellate with chloroplasts, parasitic on hydromedusae and siphonophores. The thecate planospore looks like a Peridinium Ehrenberg, with transverse and longitudinal flagella lying in grooves. Plate pattern unknown. From the region of the flagellar bases, a thick feeding tube emerges infesting the spore on the ectoderm of the host. This feeding tube is equipped with a well-developed microtubular basket and sphincter, food uptake is by myzocytosis; the organism is apparently mixotrophic. The nucleus seems to be a typical dinokaryon during the whole life cycle. Inside the theca of the mother cell, 8-16 daughter cells are formed which later are liberated and which can immediately infect a new host. Sexuality is not known. Marine ectoparasites of Cnidaria, reported from the Mediterranean and Black seas.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
